The Mauritian Prime Minister's Office announced on Monday 19 October that the curfew would not be renewed from that day, lifting night-time movement restrictions after unrest that disrupted transport and tourism activities.
This decision is based on an improvement in the situation and on assessments by the competent authorities, according to the official statement. The authorities will continue to ensure the safety of the population and to monitor developments, it says.
The British Foreign Office places the end of the last curfew at 4:30 on Monday, Mauritius time. In its travel advice, it reports road closures, transport disruption and interruptions to public services during the unrest.
The tourism sector suffered disruption beyond night-time travel. In an article published on 19 October by L'express, the president of Plaisanciers de Maurice, Prem Beerbaul, reports that visitors limited their outings and that some marine operators recorded a drop in activity.
According to him, tourists favoured short walks in the lagoon near their hotel, while fewer of those who had to travel long distances to reach providers did so. He also reported difficulties in obtaining fuel in jerrycans for boaters.
