This charter sets out the rules followed by the bifinances editorial team for all content published on the site and in the morning briefing.
Mission
bifinances publishes economic news that is useful, verified, contextualized and easy to understand. The outlet focuses first on the eight countries of the WAEMU, their companies, their markets and their public policies, while also covering African and international news that concerns them.
Information Hierarchy
Our choice of topics rests on three criteria:
- public interest and usefulness for our readers;
- the reliability and traceability of sources;
- the added value of the editorial team: context, figures, and explanation of the stakes.
Fact-Checking
Before publication, the editorial team works to:
- trace each item back to the primary source: official statement, report, financial statement, or published decision;
- cross-check at least two sources on sensitive topics, where possible;
- verify each figure, its unit, its period and its source;
- distinguish an established fact from an announcement, a forecast or a rumor.
Every article goes through an approval process before first publication. For the economic news radar, this combines documentary checks and an automated editorial review. Stories that fail these checks are held.
Distinction of Formats
Each piece of content carries its format, displayed above the headline:
- News and Brief : verified and sourced facts.
- Analysis and explainers : putting a subject into perspective, written by an identified journalist.
- Interview : statements gathered and checked for accuracy, without changing their meaning.
- Op-ed : the opinion of an outside author, who alone is responsible for it.
- Sponsored content : financed by an advertiser, clearly labelled as such at the top of the page, with no advertising added, and its links marked as sponsored.
Independence
Editorial choices are made independently of advertisers, partners and the companies we cover. Sponsored content can neither influence nor replace the coverage of the news. A journalist does not cover a subject in which they have a personal interest; any conflict of interest is disclosed.
Financial markets
Our articles and market data are not investment advice. Journalists do not carry out transactions in a stock they are preparing an article on, and do not disseminate any information before its publication.
Artificial intelligence
bifinances uses artificial intelligence tools for news monitoring, article preparation, translation and consistency checks. Radar articles may be scheduled after separate automated checks of documentary support and editorial quality. These checks do not constitute systematic human review. Radar articles are assigned bylines through a rotation of bifinances’s authors. The newsroom remains responsible for the content and any corrections. Testimony, interviews and attributed remarks must never be invented.
Respect for people
The newsroom respects people's dignity, privacy and presumption of innocence. Anyone subject to allegations is, as far as possible, contacted before publication.
Corrections
Errors are corrected visibly, in accordance with our corrections policy.
