The SUTELEC electricity workers’ union confirmed on Tuesday, 20 October, that it would maintain its strike scheduled for 21, 22 and 23 October in Senegal. State-owned utility Senelec said it had taken steps to keep electricity flowing during the three-day action.

In a statement dated 20 October, the union’s national secretariat called on members to mobilise in an orderly manner. It said it was joining the action organised by the Trade Union Front for the Defence of Workers, which includes the National Union of Autonomous Trade Unions of Senegal (UNSAS).

SUTELEC said a collective strike notice had been filed with the ministry responsible for labour and that its national union council had approved participation on 3 October. The union disputes the need for a separate notice and accused management of applying pressure, urging it instead to pursue dialogue.

In its own statement on Tuesday, Senelec said it had mobilised its departments to protect the continuity and quality of electricity supply. The utility reiterated its commitment to negotiated solutions and said it would inform customers if the situation changed.

The dispute follows talks over bonuses demanded by employees. Energy and Petroleum Minister Abdourahmane Diouf said on Monday, 19 October, in Dakar that an agreement had emerged at ministerial level. He said the conclusions on potential payments and the amounts involved had been referred to the president for a final decision.

Senelec said customers could contact its services on 33 867 66 66 or 30 100 66 66 for further information.
