The Seychelles government announced on Friday 16 October that electricity tariffs would be maintained for the remainder of 2026, in order to protect households and businesses from a further rise in their spending.

The measure was approved at the Council of Ministers on Wednesday 14 October, chaired by Vice-President Sebastien Pillay, according to the presidency's statement. It concerns the stability of existing tariffs, not a reduction in the price of electricity.

The executive says it wants to reconcile this consumer protection with the sustainability of essential public services. When presenting the decisions to the press, Mr Pillay explained that the government had examined the consequences an increase would have on the cost of living and economic activity, the daily Seychelles Nation reported.
