The central bank said on Thursday, 22 October, that it was selling foreign currency for an undisclosed amount. The shilling had weakened beyond 4,200 per dollar a day earlier.
The central bank raises its rate by 2.25 percentage points and lowers its growth forecast, under pressure from the exchange rate and energy prices.
The level reached at end-June covers 3.7 months of imports and remains below the four-month target set by the central bank.
Demand for dollars from importers, energy companies and telecoms operators is adding pressure ahead of year-end purchases.
