Investment funds: six checks before subscribing

A fund pools investments. Diversification eliminates neither losses nor fees, and withdrawal arrangements vary.

Bifinances educational guide · Updated 29 October 2026

Manager and strategy

Verify the manager and product with the relevant market authority. Read the fund documents: permitted assets, geographical scope, currency and recommended holding period. Money-market, bond and equity funds serve different needs.

Fees and access to money

Distinguish entry charges, ongoing fund expenses and exit charges. Ask when the unit value is calculated, when redemption can be requested and how long payment takes. Certain circumstances may delay or suspend withdrawals.

Reported performance and risk

Compare matching periods and check whether figures are net of fees. Average gains can conceal losing years. Illustration: +20% followed by −20% does not restore the starting value; 100 becomes 120 then 96. Assess losses you could bear without mistaking a scenario for a guarantee.

Educational information, not a personalised recommendation. Numerical examples are fictional. Fees, taxes and rules depend on the country and product; confirm the applicable terms before committing money.
