Kenya’s APA Apollo Group has acquired 66.7% stakes in two Tanzanian insurance companies, Meticulous General Insurance and Metro Life Tanzania Assurance, in transactions completed and announced on 26 October 2026. The purchases give the group majority control of businesses operating in both general and life insurance in Tanzania.
The shares were bought through AIL Holdings Tanzania, a wholly owned subsidiary of Apollo Investments, the Kenyan holding company behind APA Apollo. Meticulous offers cover for motor vehicles, fire, transport and accidents, among other risks, while Metro Life specialises in life insurance and annuities. By acquiring established operators in both segments, APA Apollo is broadening its local insurance business.
The deals were reviewed by the East African Community Competition Authority, whose notices dated 19 April 2026 described proposals to acquire up to 66.67% of each insurer. APA Apollo says it completed the purchases after obtaining the necessary regulatory clearances, including approval from Tanzania’s Fair Competition Commission. The group has not disclosed how much it paid.
The acquisitions build on an existing presence in Tanzania, where APA Apollo already owned a 34% interest in general insurer Reliance Insurance Tanzania. It also operates APA Uganda General Insurance in neighbouring Uganda. The latest investments deepen the group’s East African footprint and add majority ownership of a Tanzanian life insurer to its portfolio.
APA Apollo says Meticulous and Metro Life will continue serving their existing policyholders while drawing on the wider group’s underwriting expertise and technical resources. Their integration forms part of its 2026–2030 strategy, which places regional expansion, digital innovation and diversification at the centre of its plans.
