Burkina Faso commissioned a public rice mill at Bagré on Tuesday, 20 October, with a stated capacity to process 100 tonnes of paddy rice a day. The plant is intended to process more locally grown rice before it reaches the market, as part of efforts to develop the domestic rice sector.
Inaugurated by Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, the mill was financed from state resources and entrusted to the public company Faso Agro-Poles. It is expected to take in stocks bought directly from growers through field-side purchasing operations, linking those purchases to processing capacity.
Paddy rice must go through several stages before it can be sold as milled white rice. The Bagré plant is equipped for cleaning, hulling, whitening, sorting, grading and bagging, alongside storage and weighing. For farmers, the key issue is securing buyers able to handle their harvests and bring market-ready rice to consumers.
The opening is part of the 2026-2028 Agro-pastoral, Water and Fisheries Offensive, which seeks to expand output and processing within Burkina Faso. The authorities are counting on more regular processing to improve the availability and quality of locally produced rice.
