Drilling of the Nargis-2 gas well, conducted by Chevron in the Egyptian Mediterranean, has confirmed the extension of the reservoirs discovered in 2022 and encountered an additional gas layer, the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and the American group announced on Saturday 24 October.

The results are to be used to continue evaluating the field and to examine its prospects for commercial development. No resource volume or production start-up schedule has been published.

The well has passed 5,000 metres in depth, and assessments indicate a net thickness of gas-bearing formations of up to 35 metres. The additional layer shows reservoir properties considered to be of high quality, according to the official statement.

Work began in May with Chevron, Eni, Mubadala Energy, Tharwa Petroleum and the state-owned Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company. Drilling is being carried out from the drilling vessel Stena Forth.

The ministry presents Nargis as a discovery not yet developed and seeks to convert the identified resources into exploitable reserves in order to increase domestic gas production.
