In Mayotte, one private-sector employee in two earned no more than 1,700 euros net a month in full-time equivalent terms in 2024, according to an Insee study published in October 2026. This median salary was 420 euros lower than in provincial France, defined as mainland France excluding Île-de-France.

The private sector employed 24,200 people at the end of 2024, or 47% of the island's salaried employment. The average net salary stood at 2,160 euros a month, compared with 2,480 euros in provincial France, a gap of 13%. It was also 3% lower than the average recorded in La Réunion.

The gaps were wider at the bottom of the scale. The lowest-paid 10% of employees earned no more than 1,210 euros net a month in Mayotte, compared with 1,490 euros in provincial France. At the other end, the best-paid 10% earned at least 3,570 euros, or 6% less than the provincial threshold of 3,790 euros.

The different level of the minimum wage explains part of this gap. From January to October 2024, the monthly net Smic stood at 1,203.34 euros in Mayotte, compared with 1,398.69 euros in the rest of France. After the November increase, 27% of Mahoran private-sector employees in full-time equivalent terms still earned less than the national Smic, according to the scope of the study.

The structure of jobs also weighs on the average. Managers accounted for 9% of private-sector employees in Mayotte, compared with 18% in provincial France. Yet they earned 4,670 euros net on average, or 15% more than their counterparts in provincial France. Employees under 40 years old made up 57% of the workforce, compared with 48% in provincial France.

More than half of Mahoran private-sector employees worked in a company with fewer than 50 staff. In firms with fewer than ten employees, the average net salary was limited to 1,810 euros a month. Construction, which accounted for 16% of private-sector jobs, recorded an average of 1,980 euros, 15% below that of provincial France.

Since 1 January 2026, a decree raised the Mahoran gross hourly Smic to 9.33 euros, up from 8.98 euros. The Mayotte refoundation law provides for a gradual alignment of the net Smic with the national level by December 2031.
