Lesotho will run a campaign from 19 to 30 October to help miners and former miners claim unpaid benefits, Labour and Employment Minister Ts'eliso Mokhosi announced. The initiative, presented on Friday 16 October in Maseru and reported by The Reporter and Lesotho Tribune, will bring together several bodies responsible for these rights.

The Mineworkers Provident Fund, Rand Mutual Assurance and the Tshiamiso Trust are due to take part in the operation. Banks will help beneficiaries without an account to open one to receive their payments. The minister warned against intermediaries who demand money to release benefits.

The campaign will cover Leribe, Mohale's Hoek, Mafeteng, Berea and Maseru. Families of deceased miners will also be able to find out about their rights, according to Lesotho Tribune. Those concerned are invited to bring their identity documents and mining employment records.

The support comes as compensation payments continue to be made. In its tally as of 16 October, the Tshiamiso Trust counts 10,791 payments linked to Lesotho, for a cumulative total of 1.021 billion rand. These payments relate to its compensation scheme for occupational lung diseases.
