Senegal’s National Oilseed Marketing Company still needs to raise CFA25 billion from a banking pool to finance the purchase of 250,000 tonnes of groundnuts during the 2026-2027 marketing season, its chief executive said in Dakar on Thursday, October 22.
Cheikh Ahmeth Tidiane Guèye said 75% of the CFA100 billion package had already been secured. The National Bank for Economic Development and the Agricultural Bank are among the lenders expected to complete the financing, according to the Senegalese Press Agency.
The remaining requirement comes as the government estimates that marketing the country’s harvests will need just over CFA200 billion in total. The plan covers groundnuts, rice, cotton, maize, millet, sesame and horticultural products. Cotton collection is due to start on November 15 and groundnut collection at the end of the month, according to Emedia’s account of the interministerial council.
For farmers, the effective availability of funds will determine whether approved buyers can collect crops and pay without delay. The plan calls for starting liquidity of about CFA1 billion a day during the first 30 days, before the first disbursements from funding partners.
The government also announced payment of CFA44 billion in arrears owed to agricultural input suppliers and a financing plan for each crop segment. It plans to expand mobile payments and gradually digitise the tracking of collection points, volumes and payments.
In the previous season, SONACOS collected 219,171 tonnes of groundnuts and injected CFA73.43 billion into rural areas, Emedia reported. The target of 250,000 tonnes is about 14% above that purchased volume and does not amount to a forecast for national production.
