The Comoros National Electricity Company said on Friday, 23 October that the 100 million Comorian francs per month reported for the second quarter of 2026 represents a performance gain, not net profit established through audited annual accounts.
The clarification follows the release two days earlier of a review covering February 2025 to October 2026. SONELEC said its electricity business on Ngazidja moved from a monthly loss of about KMF250 million in 2024 to a loss of KMF22 million in 2025 and then to a positive monthly result of KMF100 million in the second quarter of 2026.
The company said the amount reflects stronger performance and revenue. It should therefore not be described as net profit in the accounting sense. The figures were released by management, and no audited accounts covering the period were published with the presentation.
SONELEC said sales reached KMF15.2 billion in 2025, up 7%, while fuel spending fell by KMF2.2 billion, or 22%. Average electricity availability was reported at 20 hours a day on Ngazidja in 2026 and 18 hours and 19 minutes on Anjouan in September, while Mohéli was said to have continuous supply.
Output is projected at 126.5 gigawatt-hours in 2026, compared with 110 GWh in 2025. Solar power’s share was reported to have risen from 9.6% in 2024 to 19.6% this year, according to figures presented by the government and the company.
The recovery remains constrained by the state of the thermal fleet. Only 23 megawatts are available out of 41.6 MW installed. SONELEC plans KMF33 billion in technical investment from 2027 to 2029 and is targeting at least 23 hours of electricity a day in 2027, subject to the necessary equipment and funding.
