The African Development Bank (AfDB) priced a HK$2 billion social bond on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, with a fixed coupon of 4.143% and a maturity date of 6 November 2031. Announced the following day, the transaction expands the pan-African lender’s access to Hong Kong’s capital markets.
The notes were priced at par, or 100% of face value, with settlement scheduled for 6 November 2026. HSBC and Standard Chartered Bank acted as joint lead managers. The AfDB plans to list the securities on the regulated market of the Luxembourg Stock Exchange under ISIN HK0001376182.
Orders exceeded HK$3.4 billion, including HK$2.05 billion of interest attributed to the joint lead managers. During bookbuilding, the pricing spread narrowed from an initial indication of three basis points over HIBOR mid-swaps to flat against that benchmark. The final coupon and re-offer yield were both set at 4.143%.
Hong Kong investors take the largest share
Hong Kong-based accounts received 97% of allocations, with the remaining 3% going to investors elsewhere in Asia. Bank treasuries accounted for 91% of the distribution by investor type, while asset and fund managers took 9%, according to the AfDB’s transaction breakdown.
This is the bank’s second public bond denominated in Hong Kong dollars. In March 2026, it priced a HK$3 billion issue paying 2.615% with a maturity of three years and three months. The latest deal extends its Hong Kong dollar funding curve to five years.
The social bond’s proceeds are earmarked to finance or refinance eligible projects under the AfDB’s Sustainable Bond Framework. By tapping the Hong Kong dollar market again, the lender broadens its investor and funding-currency base while directing the financing towards eligible social development activities in Africa.
